The D-Day offensive by Allied forces in Europe was the largest airborne operation during the Normandy invasion. The 13,000 paratroopers were flown to the Cotentin Peninsula by 925 C-47 aircraft from southern England bases. Later, 4,000 male glider infantry, auxiliary weaponry, medical personnel, and signal units were scheduled to be deployed via 500 gliders. The parachute troops' most difficult task was a nocturnal airborne insertion into hostile territory five hours before the amphibious assault.
